The best ways to enjoy Bath Christmas markets

Aaah, the magic of Christmas. It is as much a part of Christmas as the day itself. The shopping trips for gifts, browsing the internet for that perfect something, the parties and get togethers, the missed friends that we find an excuse to catch-up with. In the heart of Bath, the enchanting Christmas markets are a highlight in the city in the festive build-up. Bustling streets, the whiff of roasted chestnuts or delicious mulled wine, the independent stalls for that perfect gift. We take a look here at the best things to know about the Bath Christmas markets.

Where, when and the highlights

The 2023 Bath Christmas markets will take place from Thursday 23rd November until Sunday 10th December. That is 18 days to make the most of Bath. Most days, the market opens at 10:00am and will close between 6:00pm on Sundays and up to 8:00pm on Saturdays. The stalls are located right in the heart of the city and weave their way around the main attractions in the city so you can shop and spot all at the same time. The main street of stalls is on Union Street with winter warmers available around Thermae Bath Spa and the Roman Baths and stalls scattered around Bath Abbey.

What perfect gifts can you find?

There are all manner of independent stall holders at Bath Christmas markets. Pick up little Christmas decoration treasures, local trinkets, beautiful jewellery, candles, pottery….the list goes on and on. Hundreds of independent businesses bring a taste of their products to Bath, many locally based to help you find the perfect little gift for friends, partners and for yourself. What can you nibble on?

You will probably be unable to resist the aromas that are wafting up and down Union Street during the Christmas markets. Mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, Bratwurst, waffles and churros, you name it, there will be street food to enjoy during the markets and plenty of bars to sit in with a festive cocktail or a Bath G&T. Go on, it is Christmas after all.

Where should you stay?

Of course, we are biased and would recommend you stay at The Francis Hotel, but in all seriousness, its location in Queen Square is top notch. A five minute walk to the Christmas markets, the Christmas ice rink at Victoria Park, a festive frolic around the Royal Crescent and five minutes to the soothing spa waters of Thermae Bath Spa. A little 10 minute wander through the market stalls and you will be at Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge. Not many hotels in the city can offer you such proximity to everything that is happening this Christmas.
