Our story

Whilst the Sutton Hotel Collection story began in 2017, the hotels themselves have a rich and fascinating history that pre-dates this very new and exciting chapter.

In 1838, The Queens Hotel Cheltenham first opened its doors, named in honour of Queen Victoria as a stunning example of neo-classical architecture and a reflection of Cheltenham’s growing fame and reputation. In the same century, The Castle Hotel Windsor also grew into one of the grandest places to stay in the Royal Borough, indeed, the hotel was so popular among the elite that the Duke of Wellington stepped in to dine after his victory over Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo. Just under two centuries later, The Francis Hotel Bath enjoyed an extensive restoration that transformed the building into a unique Regency-inspired townhouse hotel, combining 21st century elegance with all the splendour of its historic past.

family at the core

Fast forward to the modern day, in 2017, the Sutton family acquired these three beautiful hotels which now form Sutton Hotel Collection: The Francis Hotel Bath, The Queens Hotel Cheltenham and The Castle Hotel Windsor. Named after the proud legacy of our family, Sutton Hotel Collection is delighted to celebrate the local community of each hotel, whilst creating a meaningful and memorable stay for guests, with the best of British quality and service at our very core.

One of our proudest ambassadors, Caroline Sutton, daughter of the late Sir Richard Sutton, is a prevalent member of the Sutton family, pushing the boundaries of hospitality and driving each hotel to excellence, and a move towards key priorities such as sustainability and accessibility. Moreover, Sir David’s daughter Charlotte is a celebrated artist and her stunning artwork is displayed throughout each of the hotels, reflecting how family pride runs through each hotel’s roots. We have incredibly exciting plans to deliver our vision for an elevated hotel stay and look forward to bringing this vision alive in the future.
